![]() You guys said "It's not worth it (warranty / shipping / tax / resale)". I said yes, I have, something very like it - different frame and no wheels, but wheels are less than 15% of his purchase. He asked "has anyone done this or something like it". He asked "is it cheaper building a road bike (from parts bought overseas)". Even with these additions they'll still be much cheaper thant the locally sourced equivalents. I do agree with you that since they are above $1000 they will have GST (not sales tax) added, a point to note for the OP, the GST is levied on the value of the item including shipping, then a clearance fee is charged - on my most recent frame import the clearance fee was $48.85. Since the OP obviously doesn't share my dislike of these things, the point is moot. I wouldn't buy either of them in any country so that's not germane to the discussion, so I probably shouldn't have said anything. I wouldn't touch the frame because it's carbon and the wheels because they don't have enough spokes. In doing so you've not answered the OPs question at all, (snip) you essentially contradict your own theme and end up supporting my stance with the above. I'm currently doing a new bike for my wife and this time it will be just the rims.Įdit: I forgot I bought the rear hub from Shifter Bikes, I should add that their prices were as good as the US equivalent on the hubs (C4s). ![]() Thirdly, even if the first two don't apply you'll be so far ahead on price you could just replace the malfunctioning part and still come out ahead.įor the record (pun intended) I recently built up a new bike and the only parts I bought locally were rims (Velocity) and spokes. ![]() Secondly, the big UK mailorder houses got that way because they do everything well, including handling warranty issues. Ignore what the above posters say about warranty issues for three reasons: Firstly, failure rates on Campy gear are very low so it's unlikely anything will happen. Shipping will be free so you lose nothing and you obviate having GST added at this end. I can't answer to the frame nor the wheels as I wouldn't touch either of them but as for the other parts:ĭon't bother buyng the group in one piece, buy the parts in tranches of less than $AUD1000. And now the first speaker for the positive. ![]()
